Mornington Peninsula Newsletter - April 2023
Welcome to the Mornington Peninsula Zero Waste Newsletter.
Data
As flagged in the February edition we have begun to track the volume of waste being managed.
In March over 1.5 tonnes of coffee grounds were diverted from landfill (and used to create rich compost at various sites) alongside smaller volumes of food and green waste.
A ticker will go up on the website shortly, so all stakeholders have visibility to the outcomes being delivered across these various streams. (CDS items will be added when the scheme comes online).
Options re Food Waste
As per my recent Instagram posts, the results of the Black Soldier Fly experiment were promising. Making progress from here will require engagement with EPA Victoria, and I will follow up accordingly.
Another option that I came across at a recent sustainability event is WasteMaster, a standalone unit that accelerates the composting process and is used in hospitals, universities and shopping centres.
I will investigate the economics to see if it could provide an additional pathway to scaling up.
Social Media
I have established a social media presence and will work with all clients so they have the opportunity to illustrate to their own customers the investment they are making in terms of sustainability.
IPCC Report
The most recent report from the IPCC made for grim reading, with current national commitments (including Australia) corresponding to warming of 2-3 degrees over the next 75 years (relative to pre-industrial levels).
The theme of the report was ’everything, everywhere, all at once’, and given that food waste is responsible for generating 8-10% of overall emissions, targeting landfill diversion on the Peninsula is a no-brainer.
It just requires collective commitment and a network to make it happen.
Cheers
